چکیده

Local area networks are representative of a growing class of distributed systems which demand more sophisticated methods and tools to evaluate system behavior in the presence of faults. In particular, since they are likely to exhibit degradable performance, the concept of performability can provide more re ned assessments of their ability to perform under fault and error conditions. This paper presents the results of a detailed performability evaluation of a network employing the IEEE 802.4 protocol. In particular, a 30-station IEEE 802.4 token bus network operating in a hostile factory environment is evaluated using stochastic activity networks. Stochastic activity networks, a generalization of stochastic Petri nets, provide a convenient representation for computer networks and are formal enough to permit solution by both analysis and simulation. The evaluation results show 1) that stochastic activity networks are an appropriate model type for evaluating the performability of local area networks and 2) that the protocol is extremely tolerant to transient faults such as token losses and noise bursts under moderate network loads.

Performability Evaluation of Networked Storage Systems Using N-SPEK

This paper introduces a new benchmark tool for evaluating performance and availability (performability) of networked storage systems, specifically storage area network (SAN) that is intended for providing block-level data storage with high performance and availability. The new benchmark tool, named N-SPEK (Networked-Storage Performability Evaluation Kernel module), consists of a controller, sev...

Probabilistic Snap-Stabilizing Algorithms for Local Resource Allocation Problems

Scientific Context. Modern networks are very large-scale (about 100 000 nodes). Now, the more a network contains nodes, the greater the probability of failures is. Hence, today fault-tolerance is a main concern for distributed algorithm designers. In particular, since several decades, there is a growing interest for self-repairing methods. For example, (deterministic) self-stabilization [Dij74]...

Fault Injection Simulation: A Variance Reduction Technique For Systems With Rare Events

Performability modelling has been most successfully applied for gracefully degradable computer systems by using Markov reward models [2]. In this approach the relation of the performability model with the underlying performance and dependability model is exploited. For many systems and for many measures of interest this type of modelling is not suited, so another performability modelling approa...

Using Fault Injection to Evaluate the Performability of Cluster-Based Services

We propose a two-phase methodology for quantifying the performability (performance + availability) of cluster-based Internet services. In the first phase, evaluators use a fault-injection infrastructure to measure the impact of faults on the server’s performance. In the second phase, evaluators use an analytical model to combine an expected fault load with measurements from the first phase to a...
